1. Cream shortening and sugar together.
2. Beat in egg and flavorings.
3. Add flour and salt and mix well.
4. Divide dough into 2 portions.
5. Put red food coloring into 1 portion, leave the other one plain.
6. Take a tsp of dough from each portion.
7. Roll each into a thin rope.
8. Twist together carefully and roll gently to smooth.
9. Put on lightly greased cookie sheet and curve top of each cookie to make it look like a candy cane.
10. Bake at 375 for 8 to 9 min.
11. Press variation: Use the "rope" disk of your cookie press to make the rope for the cookies.
12. First make red, then plain, or vice versa, and then twist together.
